Purpose / Goal

Support implementation of the adopted Elementary English Language Arts curriculum

Membership Makeup

District-wide representation from teachers, instructional coaches, principals, department representatives (e.g. Special Education), and district directors. 

How are members selected?

  • Majority of members served on the ELA Adoption Committee.(Members who leave due to retirement, relocation, etc. are replaced via principal recommendation.) Principals recommend to Curriculum Director several names of teachers at the primary and intermediate levels from their schools.  Curriculum Director reviews the list recommended by principals, and select members with the goal of balancing the Adoption Team as follows:

A) Equal, or close to equal, Primary and Intermediate representation; 

          B) Equal, or close to equal, representation by grade level;

C) Equal, or close to equal, school representation; 

  • Representation from departments affected by the adoption is recommended by the Director of the affected department (e.g. Special Education, etc.).  Curriculum Director solicits principal and instructional coach representation.

Members' roles

  • Attending after-school team meetings.  
  • Engaging in the implementation projects from start to finish.
  • Being familiar with the CCSS for the content area.
  • Studying the research and best practices for the content area.
  • Reviewing curriculum program materials in depth.
  • Gathering information from teachers using conversation, interviews, surveys, staff meetings, or other methods.
  • Sharing information with staff at designated times as discussed by the committee.
  • Participating in the consensus decision-making process.
  • Making recommendations for effective ELA implementation.  
  • Supporting team decisions in a professional manner.
  • Assisting with implementation of the program at the school level by answering questions that colleagues have, attending provided trainings, etc.
