Wild About Science!

Science and pre-engineering learning, tied to the Next Generation Science Standards, are part of the curriculum throughout the grade levels in Wenatchee School District.

For kindergartners through fifth graders, science outdoor experiences are an important part of learning science every year. The foundation is laid in the classroom, preparing children for hands-on learning experiences outside.

In September 3rd graders attend the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival at the fish hatchery in Leavenworth.

October bring 2nd graders to Saddle Rock to learn about Wenatchee Landforms, through hands-on experience with stream tables.

April finds 5th graders hiking to the top of Saddle Rock for the Shrub-steppe’n Up Saddle Rock experience, where they learn about the insects, plants and animals of the shrub steppe ecosystem in our back yard.

May has 1st graders learning about the habitat and environment, also at the Saddle Rock shrub steppe environment, with a short hike

Also in May, Kindergarteners learn about habitat at the Horan Natural Area in a Tree Walk.

June finds 4th graders at Rocky Reach dam, where they learn about hydro energy, and get hands-on experience designing a dam, and figuring out the budget to build their dam.

These activities involve learning about environmental and ecology science, pre-engineering, math, and often include art and journaling as part of the learning process.

Science is important in our world — it IS our world — and it’s an imperative part of our curriculum at Wenatchee School District, both in and out of the classroom.
