High School HiCap Opportunities

Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement (A.P.) is a world-wide program that Wenatchee High School participates in.  We offer many A.P. courses (biology, calculus AB, chemistry, computer science, English literature, human geography, physics, statistics, U.S. history, etc.) and students can take exams for these and any other A.P. subjects in May.  If students achieve a passing score (3 or better out of 5) they can earn advanced placement, college credit, or both at almost every university in the country.  Exams cost only $91, or $15 if a student qualifies for free/reduced lunch.  Talk to your counselor, an A.P. teacher, or consult www.collegeboard.com for more information.

Directed Study
This is a one semester course of independent study under the direction of a department instructor/mentor. This opportunity is designed for serious students who want to pursue a topic of interest or broaden their knowledge of a subject not taught in the curriculum. Students are required to complete the Directed Study Project Plan Form ("gold sheet") prior to meeting with an instructor. If the teacher agrees to mentor the student project, the Directed Study Application Form must be completed and returned to the Counseling Office. This course is an elective and cannot be used to meet department requirements for graduation. Directed Study packets are available in the counseling office.  Students must take this class during the regular school day and for elective credit only.

Visionscape
All Directed Study students are expected to share the results of their efforts in the form of a product, service, or performance for an authentic audience. Students are encouraged to do this at a culminating event in late-May called Visionscape. The focus of this symposium is to showcase the talents and accomplishments of participating students. Mentor teachers, parents, friends, and school officials are invited to attend student presentations and performances.
