Highly Capable (HiCap)

How does HiCap work?

Each elementary school has a half-time HiCapTeaching Specialist.  Currently (2015-16) the staff is:

Three types of HiCap activities are planned: general exploratory, training in skills, and in-depth research and investigations of real problems.

A variety of services are offered for students with demonstrated need:

  • Cluster Grouping - this is when a school decides to group several HiCap kids in one classroom so they can learn from each other and have their needs more easily met by a trained teacher.
  • Pull-out Groups - students identified as, or referred as, highly capable in math, language arts, visual-spatial, etc.  Students meet with the HiCap specialist once a week for a short amount of time.
  • Differentiation - the regular classroom teacher tries to serve his/her advanced students with advanced curriculum.  Ideas and resources can be given by the HiCap specialist if requested.
  • Parent or community volunteers - let the school know if you are willing to help!  Guest speakers, mentors, Junior Great Books groups, Math is Cool, or whatever skill you can offer would be much appreciated!
