The newly elected members of the WSD Board of Directors, Sarah Knox,, Sunny Hemphill and Michele Sandberg were sworn in this evening by Judge Lesley Allan at the beginning of their first school board meeting.
Sarah Knox earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Gonzaga University and a master’s degree in elementary education at Arizona State University. She was a classroom teacher and a teacher trainer. She taught Somalian refugee students whose parents were incarcerated, and students with special needs. She currently is the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Librarian for North Central Regional Library which covers 5 counties and serves 30 cities and towns including Wenatchee.
She is the Chelan and Douglas County Literacy Council board president, volunteers with Wenatchee Learns Connect, and reads weekly in elementary school classrooms. She formerly served as the Junior Service League committee co-chair and assisted students at WestSide High School with career skills training.
Sarah’s father is a retired physician and her mother worked at the WRAC. Both still live in Wenatchee.
Sunny Hemphill majored in journalism at Baylor University and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Arizona State University. She is a classroom and school volunteer, led annual Christmas Basket program while working for Chandler Arizonan Newspaper. La Leche League leader; Cub Scout den leader, assistant Cubmaster and Cubmaster; Habitat for Humanity volunteer.
Sunny has been married for 32 years with two adult sons.
Michele Sandberg earned a bachelor's degree at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University), and doctor of medicine degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. She completed a Psychiatry Residency and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, Tripler Army Medical Center.
Michele has been a school volunteer at all levels in different capacities, including Passport Club, math club coach, fundraising, chair for various district musical committees. She also is involved in faith-based volunteer activities.
Michele is married, with four daughters ages 16, 15, 12 and 10, who attend school in Wenatchee School District.
