The Apple Leaf and Bryce Newberry are finalists

The National Scholastic Press Association has named The Apple Leaf and Bryce Newberry finalists for major high school journalism awards.

The Apple Leaf, Wenatchee High School's student newspaper, was named one of 11 tabloid division finalists for the third year in a row for the Pacemaker, the NSPA's highest award which recognizes student newspapers for overall excellence. The Apple Leaf won the honor in 2013 and 2014.

Newberry, who served as online editor for The Apple Leaf and is now attending Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, is one of eight finalists in the news story division for national Story of the Year. His story was titled "Bus trip assault chaos caught on video."

Holly Thorpe, former managing features editor for The Apple Leaf, won the Story of the Year award in 2012 for her reporting on the swimming pool drowning at WHS. She currently attends University of Washington.

The Story of the Year competition recognizes initiative and original reporting of a situation, problem or issue affecting students. Judges look for entries which show leadership, quality writing, sensitivity and fairness. Categories include News Story, Feature Story, Editorial/Commentary, Sports Story, Diversity Story and Multimedia Package. The first place winners from each category, with the exception of Multimedia Package, will compete for the $1,000 Brasler Prize.

NSPA began the Pacemaker Awards in 1927. Judges select Pacemakers based on the following: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.

Winners will be announced at the fall national convention, set for Nov. 12-15 in Orlando.
