District administrators closely monitor the local Air Quality Index for wildfire smoke levels throughout the day and use this information to guide decision-making around recess and school-sponsored outdoor activities. If cancelations or the movement of after-school outdoor activities indoors, parents will be notified by coaches or staff.
Despite unhealthy air quality Wenatcheeschools remain open. District staff are monitoring HVAC filtration systems in buildings and utilizing air filtration units to clean the air inside schools. The District has KN95 masks for our staff who need them.
School nurses are also on alert when wildfire smoke reaches high levels because it can be a trigger for students with asthma and other health conditions. Parents of students with underlying health conditions are asked to monitor them closely and keep them indoors and/or at home if they are experiencing respiratory symptoms. If you or your students are experiencing serious symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.
More information and resources on wildfire smoke and health are available from the Chelan-Douglas Health District.
