Wenatchee School District Instructional Coach Named Washington State Mathematics Fellow

Desilee Valeri was named a Washington State Mathematics Fellow for the 2018-19 school year. Desilee is an instructional coach at Sunnyslope Elementary School.

As a Fellow, Desilee becomes part of a network of instructional leaders statewide whose mission is to build teacher leadership, build a foundation of knowledge and skills, and to support instructional shifts necessary to help all students in Washington State be career and college ready.  She’ll develop a deep understanding of high-leverage practices for the implementation of Washington State Learning Standards for mathematics.

“Desilee will gain access to professional development and learning that are best practices for mathematics instruction,” said Sunnyslope principal Dave Perkins. “She is exemplary in sharing new learning with her peers and through her role as Instructional Coach. I hope to see improved teaching and learning outcomes as a result of this opportunity.”

Desilee was interested in becoming a fellow so she could be part of the statewide collaborative expertise around math, and to share what she learns with her colleagues in Wenatchee School District. But she wasn’t always a fan of math.

“As a student, I had a personal love-hate — mostly hate — relationship with math,” said Desilee, “until my 11th grade teacher, Mr. Barnett, guided me through some deep-rooted misconceptions and inspired me to push into the challenging concepts in math. I strive to be an educator like Mr. Barnett, and hope that every classroom can be filled with educators who believe, invest, and make rigorous discovery look cool.”
