Girls Swimming

General Information: Practices start on Friday Feb. 24th after school. The season runs until March 28th. Practice is instruction in the four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Turns and starts will also be taught. Students need to pass the three-part district approved swim test. 1) Swim unassisted across the pool without stopping or touching the pool bottom (14 meters or 42 feet). 2) Tread water in the deep end for 1 minute. 3) Jump into the deep end and swim back to the wall unassisted. Pioneer swimmers will need to walk over to WHS everyday for their practices and meets. The team is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

What is the Middle School Swim Program all about:
We want to build confidence and promote health through competitive swimming. Athletes will receive instruction in the four competitive strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Athletes will have opportunities to compete in both sprint and middle distance events and be introduced to the training sets and swimming “lingo” they will experience when they swim for Wenatchee High.

What do swimmers need:
o Athletic clearance through your school athletic department (don’t procrastinate) This is an online process through FamilyID.

o A Swim Suit (comfortable one-piece with straps that stay in place)
o Swim goggles (smart to bring 2 pair in case one fails)
o Swim cap (no latex caps will be allowed on WHS campus, Silicone caps can be purchsed in WHS athletic office for $10)
o Towel (most prefer to use their own rather than the school’s)
o Athletic shoes, shorts, tee-shirt and/or sweats for dry-land training

Safety and public health:
o All athletes must be able to swim across the pool, tread water in the deep end for 1 minute, and demonstrate the ability to jump into the deep end and navigate back to the wall safely. Athletes unable to pass this test will not be able to participate in middle school swimming.
o All athletes must take a cleansing shower before entering the pool.
o WHS is a latex free campus. No latex caps or any latex of any kind allowed on campus.

The 1st day of practice: is Feb. 24th and will start off in the WHS Commons/Cafeteria. After a brief team meeting and an introduction to staff and some dry land activities.
