Public Events and Athletics Inside Schools Cancelled March 11 - April 5

Updated: 3/11/20 @ 2:37 PM

The health, safety, and well-being of our students and our community are of paramount importance to the Wenatchee School District. Due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus to our region, the Chelan-Douglas Health District has advised schools and other organizations to avoid bringing groups of people together and to consider postponing public events and gatherings to the extent possible.

In response to this growing health concern, the Wenatchee School District has made the decision to cancel all indoor sports, events, and meetings involving the public, held inside District facilities, starting March 11th through April 5th.  Outdoor events and athletics will not be affected by this cancelation at this time. We will continue to re-evaluate the situation as information becomes available.

The COVID-19 virus is transmitted by coming into contact with droplets that are coughed or sneezed by a person who is infected with the virus, or by touching a contaminated surface. Adults over the age of 60 and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk of having an adverse impact to COVID-19. People at higher risk and those exhibiting symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should stay home and away from large groups of people as much as possible, including public places where there will be close contact with others.

The cancellation impacts:

  • Parent-teacher conferences (Schools will communicate the alternative meeting and conferencing plans with parents)
  • All non-school organized indoor activities
  • Public meetings
  • Public events and functions (dances, plays, concerts, parent nights, banquets)
  • Athletic and extracurricular indoor practices, and competitions
  • Community user groups (youth sports organizations, churches, non-profits)

Clarification on event cancelations: ALL events involving the public that are planned to take place inside school buildings now through April 5th are canceled. This includes outside user groups who have completed a facilities use agreement with a school or the district.

We recognize the inconvenience and impact that this decision has on the community; however, this action will contribute significantly to the region-wide effort to mitigate social contact and minimize the spread of the illness.

While the information on COVID-19 is changing day-to-day, our schools will remain open. We are working directly with state, regional, and local epidemiologists, doctors, and other public health officials to make the most informed decision for our students, staff, families, and the community. Currently, the Department of Health is not recommending that schools proactively close, and we need to do our best to remain open for students to continue learning. We are taking steps to ensure that our school facilities are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis.  We have also taken proactive measures to minimize the spreading of germs through our student meal program and are continuing to encourage students and staff to regularly wash their hands with soap and water throughout the day.

We believe the Wenatchee School District plays an important role in limiting the spread of this virus, and this is the best decision in light of COVID-19 information we have available to us at this time. Please check our website wentacheeschools.org/updates for the most up-to-day information.

Sincerely,

Dr. Paul Gordon
Superintendent
