New Breakfast After the Bell Programs

Breakfast after the bell

Beginning in the 2019/20 school year a new law requires schools with 70% or more of their student body qualifying for free and reduced meals and all Community Eligibility Schools must offer breakfast after the start of the school day to each student.

This new program ensures that all of our students have access and start the day with a healthy breakfast. Kids who eat breakfast tend to perform better in school, have better attendance rates, and display fewer behavior problems. We know those morning routines can be hectic, and many kids aren’t hungry when they wake up and that is exactly why we provide breakfast every morning in a way that allows all students to participate, even after the bell at no cost. We want to ensure every student is prepared to do their best in the classroom and that starts with a healthy breakfast.

There are many models of breakfast after the bell and after reviewing the options and working with parents, students, administrators, and staff we will be offering breakfast in the classroom at the elementary level and a second chance at the secondary levels.

Breakfast in the Classroom– breakfast is served to students after the start of the school day in their classrooms rather than the traditional cafeteria setting before school.  Students have an opportunity during the first 10-15 minutes of class to eat breakfast with their classmates and get the fuel they need to be ready to learn. Teachers will begin lessons as usual during breakfast time.

Breakfast in the classroom schools:

Columbia, Lewis & Clark and Mission View have modified their schedules to accommodate breakfast service:

Second Chance breakfast – students have the opportunity to participate in traditional breakfast program before school or grab breakfast after the start of the day during a passing period in the morning, often after the first period or midway between breakfast and lunch, and students eat in the classroom. Second Chance Breakfast is ideal for students who are not hungry first thing in the morning.

●    Wenatchee High School

There are many great things about our traditional breakfast and our new breakfast programs. In addition to having access to a nutritious breakfast, eating with classmates every morning creates a community experience, and it takes the pressure off parents and caretakers to provide breakfast in the morning. So, we will be ready with a nutritious breakfast to start your learning day.

Traditional breakfast —Traditional breakfast service will continue to be served before school at the following buildings.
Traditional breakfast schools:
Foothills Middle School
Newberry Elementary
Sunnyslope Elementary
Washington Elementary
