PHOTOSHOP: BRUSHES

What are the Photoshop Brushes?
Some Tips and Tricks…

STEP #1

Just like with traditional painting on canvas or paper,
Photoshop has brushes that are used on the computer.
There are MANY different kinds of brushes for painting with on canvas.
Here are some examples of how different brushes may look, check it out:

Let’s play around with the brushes in Photoshop.

Create a blank document (called a canvas) in PhotoShop.

Hit Command (⌘) + N, or choose FILE>NEW.

Make your canvas 8.5 x 11 INCHES and 150 RESOLUTION.
See picture below. Hit OK.

STEP #2

Choose a brush!

Click on the Brush Tool

Choose a brush! Pick the ROUND BRUSH as shown below…

Now Choose A Color for the brush (pick any color you want)…

Then click OK.

STEP #3

Now let’s try some different brushes!
We’ll start with the Round Brush.

The Round Brush can either be Hard Edged

or Soft Edged.

Right now, I’m just going to choose Hard Edged.
You can pick either one.
Move onto your canvas, press down the mouse button,
and drag the mouse.
You should end up with something like this:

Now try the same thing with the Soft Edge Brush.
You should get something like this:

What if the brush is too BIG or too SMALL?
You can use the bracket keys ( [ or ] ) to make it bigger or smaller.
Try it, then try painting with the new size and then different sizes,
using Hard and Soft brushes.

STEP #4

OK, lets clear the canvas.
Hit COMMAND + A to select all,
CLICK DELETE,
Makes sure you pick Background Color, and that the color is white. Click OK!

then hit the DELETE key (upper right on the keyboard).

Good Job!
Let’s try a different kind of brush with some options
Choose the Brush Tool, then pick a brush like this:

Now, click this tool:

And you should see this!

This Panel has a TON of Options for your brush (except the round ones).

STEP #5

Brush Options
If you need to rotate your brush, grab the small arrow here, and pull it around.
Try it and see the difference! See the next two examples:

There are many different options for each brush:

Try three or four brushes, using different sizes, colors, and different options.

Adding Different Brushes

First, with your Brush Tool selected, click here:

Then click here:

A LIST of BRUSH STYLES will appear at the bottom of the gray box!

Choose a Brush Style to ADD!

Make sure to click “APPEND” to ADD the brush style,
or all of your brushes will be replaced!

The new Brush Styles will appear at the bottom of the Brush List.

Try out your new Brushes!
Choose different colors, sizes, and rotations.
Just have fun with it.

From your program, go to FILE>SAVE AS and choose DESKTOP,
then drag from the DESKTOP to GOOGLE DRIVE.
