FEATHERING COLLAGE IN PHOTOSHOP

This lesson can be useful for creating any kind of collage
(putting a bunch of pictures together into one) in Photoshop.
And a ton of other things!

FEATHERING COLLAGE 01  FEATHERING COLLAGE 02  FEATHERING COLLAGE 03  FEATHERING COLLAGE 04  FEATHERING COLLAGE 05

Step 1

Create a blank document (called a canvas) in PhotoShop.

Hit Command (⌘) + N, or choose FILE>NEW.

Make your canvas 10 x 16 INCHES and 150 RESOLUTION.
See picture below. Hit OK.

your canvas

Step 2

Find images for your collage! You will need many, enough to fill your canvas.

Look on Google.com for similar images to something that you like (cats, cars, trees, hamburgers, etc.).
Please make it school appropriate!

Click VIEW IMAGE on each picture. Then CONTROL + CLICK and COPY IMAGE.

Go to your canvas in Photoshop and choose EDIT>PASTE.

Step 3

You may be asking, “How can I make my image Bigger or Smaller?”
Hit Command (⌘) +T or go to: EDIT>FREE TRANSFORM.

Hold SHIFT while you drag the corners, it will change all sides of the picture at once.
Otherwise, your picture will squish taller or skinnier, and not look natural!

Step 4

Choose the Lasso Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (L).

feather-2

Use the LASSO TOOL to draw around the part of the image you want.

Draw a sort of circular shape inside the image. When you are done, double click and your selection should be ready!

Step 5

Go to: Select>Modify>Feather and set the Feather Radius to whatever works for you …

Feather Radius
You don’t have to use 25. If you’re not sure what the Feather Radius should be, just try it and see.
You can always undo it and try again …

Step 6

Now select the inverse (the opposite of what you selected) by going to SELECT>INVERSE or hitting COMMAND + SHIFT + I.

Hit Delete and the feathered outside area should disappear leaving a smooth transition between the two images instead of a rough edge.
If the image disappears, it means that your didn’t INVERSE your selection properly.

Step 7

Do this with each image on your canvas until you have a collage of pictures.

From your program, go to FILE>SAVE AS and choose DESKTOP,
then drag from the DESKTOP to GOOGLE DRIVE and the Correct Class Folder.

Save your final file in Google Classroom.
Just add the file from Google Drive.
