LET'S MEET THE PHOTOSHOP TOOLBAR (part three)

Let's learn the rest of the Adobe Photoshop Toolbar.
You will be using a picture to work on that I have picked for you.

Open up Photoshop (Remember how?) Click on the

OK, now let’s get the picture we are going to use.

Hold down the CONTROL key and click on the image of the girl.

Choose COPY IMAGE.

Go back to Photoshop and on the top menu, choose FILE>NEW.
Click OK. Then choose EDIT>PASTE.

Let’s Try Some More Tools!

Gradient (Grey-dee-ent) and Paint Bucket Tool

First, let’s look at the Paint Bucket Tool.
What does it do? How do you find it? You will use this later!
Press the mouse and hold it on the gradient tool.
You will see the Paint Bucket Tool appear!

If you click with it on a picture it will fill the area selected
with the foreground color you have selected.

Personally, I think it’s easier to fill something with color
by using EDIT>FILL, but that’s just my opinion!

Now the Gradient Tool is a tool for creating a color blend from one color to another.
Click on the Gradient Tool and click the GRADIENT in the Options Panel.

This will open the Gradient Editor.
You will see it is set at Foreground to Background color.
You can change those colors several ways.
For now, click Foreground to Transparent.
You will see the name change in the Name area.

Notice how the color strip at the bottom now goes
from solid black to “clear” (transparent). Click OK.

Put your cursor at the bottom of the picture.
Hold dow the SHIFT key and drag your cursor just off the top of the picture.

Let go of the mouse. You picture should have gone from this:

To this:

It took the foreground color at the bottom and faded it into a transparent color on top.
There are lots of uses for this tool which we will learn later on.

Blur, Sharpen, and Smudge Tool

The Blur Tool and the Sharpen Tool have some obvious purposes:
they blur and/or sharpen.
Try each one a little on your picture.
You can make the brush larger or smaller by using the bracket keys ( [ & ] ).

The Smudge Tool allows you to “smudge” pixels. It’s main use (at least for me) is to create hair.
Let’s say I cut and copy in a document a wolf (or a human head)
but I don’t select the hairs very well so it looks fake.
Then I use the smudge tool at the edge of the fur to fake hair.

Try it!

Dodge Tool ,Burn Tool

Now these are pretty good tools.
Dodge Tool lightens and Burn Tool darkens.

A quick tip: If you are using the Dodge Tool hold Option/Alt
to temporarily switch to Burn Tool and vice-versa.

Try them out on parts of your picture!

Pen Tool

These tools basically allow you to draw shapes and move points around. Don't worry about trying this yet.

Horizontal Type Tool (I just call it the Text or Type Tool)

Type tools allow you to add text to your images.
Simply click anywhere in your document with one of these tools and start typing.

You can change the font, size and other settings in the Options Panel.
When you are done typing simply press Ctrl + Enter to close the paragraph and stop typing.
If you click and drag with one of these two tools you will create a box
which will allow you to type only inside that box.

Go ahead and click on your picture and type your name.
Try to change the size, font, and color from the Options Panel at the top!

Path Selection Tool

These tools are designed to manipulate and select paths.
It works with an image created by the Pen Tool.

We’ll learn more about these tools later on.

Rectangle Tool, Rounded Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool, Polygon Tool, Line Tool, Custom Shape Tool

These tools allow us to draw different shapes.

The Custom Shape tool has some neat shapes that you can play around with if you want.
If you choose the Custom Shape Tool, look at the Options Panel at the top to choose your shape.

Hand Tool

If you are zoomed into a document the Hand Tool allows you to drag the document.
Simply click and drag and you will see what I am talking about.
You can temporarily use the Hand Tool from almost any other tool by simply holding the Space bar.

Zoom Tool

The Zoom Tool allows you to zoom into a document.

Drag to the left to zoom out or drag to the right to zoom in.

Click to zoom in, Option/Alt-click to zoom out.
You can temporarily access the Zoom Tool from almost any tool by holding Option/Alt + Space.

You can also zoom in and out by holding COMMAND + and COMMAND -.

Set Foreground and Background Colors.

If you click on one of these icons the Color Picker window will pop up allowing you to select a color.
In this picture, black is the Foreground Color (the color you will paint with, etc.), and white is the Background Color.

ASSIGNMENT THREE:

1. On the picture of the girl, use some of the tools in this lesson and submit the picture.

2. Use the GRADIENT TOOL and the BLUR, SHARPEN, and SMUDGE TOOLS to make changes to your picture.

3. Use the Text Tool to type your name on your picture, changing the font, size, and color.

4. Try the Shape, Zoom, and Hand Tools!

5. Save your picture to the Desktop. Choose FILE>SAVE AS and choose DESKTOP.
   Just leave the name as it is and click OK.

That’s the end of part three of the toolbar!

From your program, go to FILE>SAVE AS and choose DESKTOP,
then drag from the DESKTOP to GOOGLE DRIVE and the Correct Class Folder.

Save your final file in Google Classroom.
Just add the file from Google Drive.
