PHOTOSHOP: TEXTURE YOUR FACE!

In this lesson, you will learn about Textures in Photoshop
and some other cool tools to use when working with pictures!
Here’s some samples!

STEP #1

FIRST THING: THIS IS FUN!
Don’t take yourself too seriously. And YES, you have to take your photo!
As I said, you will be using your own photo a lot this year!

Use Photo Booth (not Photoshop) to take a picture of yourself.
To Open Photobooth, Hold Down COMMAND + SPACEBAR
and start typing PHOTO. Photobooth will appear! Click that.

Look into the camera, pose however you want, and click the red button.
You will get a 3 second countdown.
When you get the photo you want,
drag the small version at the bottom of the screen to the desktop.

Use CONTROL + CLICK, click your picture on the desktop,
and choose OPEN WITH>PHOTOSHOP.
Photoshop should open (if it’s not already)
and your photo should magically appear!

If your Photo looks dark (and it probably will), go to the top menu and choose
Image>Adjustments>Shadows/Highlights.
Click OK. It should look better, if not hit COMMAND + Z to undo it.

As you work, don’t forget to save your work before you leave class.
You will want to save it to the desktop, then up to GOOGLE DOCS.
You can open it up again the next time to work on it.

STEP #2

Make sure the LAYERS panel is open, click on your face layer,
and CONTROL + CLICK on the layer and choose DUPLICATE LAYER.
(Or you can just hit COMMAND + J to duplicate a layer).

STEP #3

Turn the Visibility Off

On the bottom Layer, turn the Layer Visibility OFF by clicking the eye.

STEP #4

Turn the new layer black and white!

Click on the top layer, then Image>Adjustments>Desaturate
or hit: Command+Shift+U

STEP #5

Select Your Skin!

Get the Magnetic Lasso Tool
(if you know how to use the Polygonal Lasso Tool, it might work better!!! Ask me about it!) and Select Your Skin. Make sure you include your neck and any other skin showing!

Finish where you started, and watch for the little icon to change …

STEP #6

Select Inverse!

Go to: Select>Inverse … or hit Command (⌘)+Shift+i
to select EVERYTHING EXCEPT Your Face …

then hit the BACKSPACE/DELETE key to remove the background.

STEP #7

Let’s Find a Texture!

CLICK THIS LINK on Google Images to find a texture you would like to use for your face.

When you find the texture you want, click on it and choose VIEW IMAGE.
Hold the CONTROL button, click the image, and choose COPY IMAGE.
Go to your image in Photoshop and choose EDIT>PASTE or COMMAND + V.
You should nowhave a new layer on top of your picture layers with the texture on it.

STEP #8

Shrink the Texture Down!

Make sure the TEXTURE LAYER is selected.

FIRST, change the OPACITY (how much you can see through it)
at the top of the LAYERS PANEL to about 75%.

If necessary, Zoom Out, hit Command (⌘) +T
and shrink down the texture to fit around your head.

STEP #9

Get Rid of the Excess Texture!

Command (⌘) + Click the Layer Thumbnail Picture of the LOWER layer …

Then click the TEXTURE LAYER again!

Then select the INVERSE by clicking COMMAND + SHIFT + I.

Then hit BACKSPACE/DELETE to get rid of the extra texture!

STEP #10

Change the BLENDING MODE!

Click on the new texture layer and scroll through the Blending Modes and find one you like …

Try Multiply, Screen, or Overlay or whatever you like best …

… and don’t be afraid to experiment!

STEP #11

Change the OPACITY (how much you can see through it)!

With the middle layer selected…

… adjust the OPACITY of the layer and see what that does …

STEP #12

Get Rid of the Texture over your Eyes and Mouth!

Turn ON the Visibility of all your layers now …

Pick the ERASER tool.

Choose a Soft Round Brush for your Eraser.

… click on the texture layer …

Click COMMAND + D (“D” stands for DESELECT) to make sure nothing is selected.

Erase the areas where your eyes and mouth are.

Erase the same areas of the middle layer, too!

And You Are DONE! Awesome!

LAST STEPS

From your program, go to FILE>SAVE AS and choose DESKTOP,
then drag from the DESKTOP to GOOGLE DRIVE and the Correct Class Folder.

Save your final file in Google Classroom.
Just add the file from Google Drive.
