Purpose of Grades

Grades should tells us: 

What a student knows or is able to do.

Whether a student has reached the learning goal (standard)

A student’s current level of performance (meeting, exceeding, approaching standard).

A student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Whether a student has improved during the quarter, semester, or year.

Whether a student is ready to move on to higher levels of learning or new concepts (O'Connor, 2007)
