Two WSD Parents Being Tested for COVID-19 - updated

Updated: 3/12/20 @2:57 PM

The Wenatchee School District was notified that two parents of students at Lewis & Clark Elementary, Orchard Middle School and Pioneer Middle School are being tested for the COVID-19 virus. At this time, the parents and children are being self-quarantined at home pending test results.

While the information on COVID-19 is changing day-to-day, schools will remain open unless there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 in a student, staff member or close contact and we are instructed by the Chelan-Douglas Health District to close. It is important to provide continued instruction and, for some students, meals unless an infection prevents us from doing so. Most students are healthy and are not at risk for complications from COVID-19. Medically vulnerable and people over 60 are most at risk from COVID-19.

Parents may excuse their children from school due to COVID-19 related concerns by contacting their child’s school’s attendance office.  Excused absences that occur during this “State of Emergency” as declared by the Governor will not be counted towards truancy. However, as long as school is in session and not closed, students will need to make arrangements with their teachers to stay current with assignments per our usual practices when a student is absent.

To help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus you are advised to practice personal prevention methods.

  • Do not bring your student to school if they do not feel well or have cold or flu-like symptoms (elevated temperature, fever, cough, shortness of breath). Keep your student home.
  • Do not come to work at the school if you do not feel well or have cold or flu-like symptoms (elevated temperature, fever, cough, shortness of breath). Stay home.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water. If you do not have soap and water, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Sneeze and cough into a tissue, elbow or sleeve instead of your hands.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, touching your nose or putting your fingers by or in your mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms

The Washington State Department of Health has established a hotline with a live person to address questions from the public. If you have questions about what is happening in Washington state, how the virus is spread, and what to do if you have symptoms, please call the WSDOH hotline at 1-800-525-0127.

3/12/20 Update: // One of the parents that had reportedly been undergoing testing for COVID-19 has received a negative test result. The second parent, after further investigation with healthcare authorities, was in fact not, undergoing COVID-19 testing as previously reported.
