WSD Mock Trial Team Places at State Championship Tournament

Wenatchee, WA –The Wenatchee School District Mock Trial team had a strong showing at the 2022 YMCA Washington State Mock Trial Championship on March 13. Of the 24 teams that qualified for the state championship tournament, Wenatchee School District defeated their first three opponents on their way to a fifth-place finish. Wenatchee lost their last round to Skyline High School from Sammamish, WA.

The team is comprised of the following students:

Lucia Musacchi – Attorney 

Lissette Pasion – Attorney and Witness 

Cadel Velazquez – Attorney and Witness 

Iris Barry – Attorney and Witness 

Norah Dillman – Attorney 

Maren Stuber – Witness 

Katherine Dunlop – Witness 

Nene Van Winkle – Witness 

Iris Barry, Lissette Pasion, and Lucia Musacchi received a combined eight nominations for best attorney, with Lucia receiving five, a personal best. Cadel Velazquez, Iris Barry, Katherine Dunlop, Lissette Pasion, and Nene Van Winkle received a combined seven nominations for best witness. Students are nominated for these awards at the end of each round by the judges and lawyers assigned to rate each team’s performance in the round. Wenatchee won their first three rounds against Seattle Academy, Franklin, and Skyline’s second team.

Wenatchee’s second team, comprised almost entirely of freshmen, performed strongly at the district competition.

The Wenatchee School District Mock Trial teams provide the opportunity for students to compete at the local, state, and national level, while learning from local legal experts, including lawyers and judges. The team is coached by Frank Brandt, Tracy Brandt, Lesley Allan, Zach Goytowski, Reuben Hart, and Brian Higgins.

“It’s so great to see how these students, who have such potential, have grown this year. We are excited to see this team continue to grow, especially with the implementation of Mock Trial as a component of our social studies curriculum at the high school, next year,” said coach Reuben Hart.
