WHS Students Help with Toward Zero Waste Effort at Apple Blossom Festival

Random Acts of Kindness advisor Chris Hockett with WHS students Tamara Gil and Kenia Camacho.

Over 20 WHS students from the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) and Interact clubs volunteered to help reduce waste at this year’s Apple Blossom Festival.

The Toward Zero Waste program, coordinated by Wenatchee Confluence Rotary member Kris Cameron, is in its second year. Volunteers worked throughout the festival to divert as much waste as possible from landfills and into composting and recycling. This is mostly done through education, but volunteers got their hands dirty too, saving recyclable materials from the trash.

"Weekends during Apple Blossom are the busiest days that generate the most waste, so those were our priority days,” said Cameron. “We could not have met our goals for those days without the help of the WHS Interact and Random Acts of Kindness clubs.”

WHS students made up 20% of Toward Zero Waste’s volunteers this year, collectively donating nearly 70 hours toward the cause.

Cameron described the impact of student volunteers, saying that “club volunteers were a huge part of the success of the project. RAK club members even filled in for several last minute openings in the schedule!"

Thank you to Toward Zero Waste for giving out students the opportunity to impact sustainability efforts in our valley!
