Highly Capable (HiCap)

Basic Ideas of WSD Highly Capable programs

  • Every child has the right to an appropriate education.  RCW 28A.185.020 states, in no uncertain terms, "The legislature finds that, for highly capable students, access to accelerated learning and enhanced instruction IS access to a BASIC education."
  • Talent should be sought and nurtured in all children.  PE, music, and art classes already address many talents.  Academic talents should also be addressed by allowing students to work on the material THEY are ready to learn next.
  • Advanced academic opportunities should be available in a variety of talent areas (reading, writing, math, science, engineering, etc.). Emphasis should be on talent development.
  • There are students who demonstrate unusual academic talents and capabilities who are in need of special provisions within and in addition to the regular curriculum.
  • These students need curriculum that is appropriately different in pace and complexity, and regular opportunities to work with students of similar abilities.
