Alfonso López tapped to serve as Director of Hispanic/Latino Relations

After 27 years at Lewis & Clark Elementary, López is ready to take on a new role that aims to enhance relations between the Hispanic/Latino community and Wenatchee schools.

The Wenatchee School District is proud to announce that Alfonso López has been chosen as the District’s Director of Hispanic/Latino Relations. This is a new district-level position that is focused on strengthening relationships and meeting the needs of Wenatchee’s growing Hispanic/Latino/a community. 53% of WSD students and families identify as Hispanic/Latino/a. This is the largest demographic of students in the district and growing.

The need to strengthen relations with the Hispanic/Latino community is clear to the District and has been underscored during the COVID 19 Pandemic. Based on feedback from parents and the community, and from the preliminary results of the district’s equity program review, the need to improve connections and build trust with Hispanic/Latino/a families is essential for the academic success of our students.

López, a Mexican-born educator who immigrated to the United States at age 24, worked in the orchards in the Wenatchee Valley, served as a ranch hand in Ellensburg, and later went on to receive his bachelor's degree in Education at Heritage University. Over the last 27 years, López worked his way up at Lewis & Clark Elementary from being a paraprofessional to a bilingual classroom teacher, and then in 2006, he became principal of the district’s only dual-language school. In 2019, López was named Washington State Elementary Principal of the Year, an honor that took him to the White House where he was able to advocate for bilingual education. 

López’s experience extends well beyond the classroom and includes authoring and illustrating dual-language children's books, hosting radio programming, and writing for the Spanish language newspaper El Mundo. 

“I have been fortunate to have had many opportunities in my life, and I believe strongly that it is important to connect education with our community— I’m excited I will be able to do that for more than just the school I love, but for the whole community,” said López during a meeting with Lewis & Clark staff where he announced his transition. 

“Mr. López’s unique life experiences, educational leadership, and role as a trusted and respected messenger in the Hispanic/Latino/a community make him ideally suited for this position — quite honestly, there is no one else who could do this work better than Alfonso,” said Superintendent Dr. Paul Gordon. López will begin his new role as the Director of Hispanic/Latino Relations on July 1, 2022, and will work with District administrators in the recruitment and selection process for his replacement at Lewis & Clark.

El Distrito Escolar de Wenatchee se enorgullece en anunciar que Alfonso López ha sido elegido como Director de Relaciones Hispanas/Latinas del Distrito. Esta es una nueva posición a nivel de distrito que se enfoca en fortalecer las relaciones y satisfacer las necesidades de la creciente comunidad hispana/latina de Wenatchee. 53% de los estudiantes y familias del Distrito Escolar de Wenatchee se identifican como hispanos/latinos/a. Este es el grupo demográfico más grande de estudiantes en el distrito y sigue creciendo.

La necesidad de fortalecer las relaciones con la comunidad hispana/latina es clara para el Distrito y se ha subrayado durante la pandemia de COVID 19. Con base en los comentarios de los padres y la comunidad, y de los resultados preliminares de la revisión del programa de equidad del distrito, la necesidad de mejorar las conexiones y generar confianza con las familias hispanas/latinas es esencial para el éxito académico de nuestros estudiantes.

López, un educador nacido en México que emigró a los Estados Unidos a los 24 años, trabajó en los huertos del Valle de Wenatchee, sirvió como peón en un rancho en Ellensburg y luego recibió su licenciatura en Educación en la Universidad Heritage. En los últimos 27 años, López se abrió camino en la escuela primaria Lewis & Clark, desde paraprofesional hasta maestro bilingüe, y luego, en 2006, se convirtió en director de la única escuela bilingüe del distrito. En 2019, López fue nombrado Director del Año de la Escuela Primaria del Estado de Washington, un honor que lo llevó a la Casa Blanca, donde pudo abogar por la educación bilingüe. 

La experiencia de López se extiende mucho más allá del salón de clases e incluye la autoría e ilustración de libros infantiles en dos idiomas, la conducción de programas de radio y la escritura para el periódico en español El Mundo. 

“He tenido la suerte de haber tenido muchas oportunidades en mi vida, y creo firmemente que es importante conectar la educación con nuestra comunidad. Estoy emocionado de poder hacer eso por algo más que la escuela que amo, pero para toda la comunidad”, dijo López durante una reunión con el personal de Lewis & Clark donde anunció su transición. 

Las experiencias de vida únicas del Señor Lopez, el liderazgo educativo y el papel como un mensajero confiable y respetado en la comunidad hispana/latina lo hacen ideal para este puesto; honestamente, no hay nadie más que pueda hacer este trabajo mejor que Alfonso”, dijo el superintendente Dr. Paul Gordon. López comenzará su nuevo cargo como Director de Relaciones Hispanas/Latinas el 1 de julio de 2022 y trabajará con los administradores del Distrito en el proceso de reclutamiento y selección para su reemplazo en Lewis & Clark.
