What is the Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code is a global movement introducing tens of millions of students worldwide to computer science, inspiring kids to learn more, breaking stereotypes, and leaving them feeling empowered.

We live in a world surrounded by technology and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. This year, Hour of Code events are happening during computer science awareness week, December 3-6. An Hour of Code event is your opportunity to come a learn about coding alongside your student, meet a coding professional, and have a lot of fun in the process!

As dozens of schools in North Central Washington are taking part in the Hour of Code during the school day, five Wenatchee schools are opening their doors to the community to join their students and take a part in Computer Science Education week and show support by spending an hour writing computer code.

In a 2017 poll, 91% of Washington State voters were supportive of computer science education.

“These evening events are an opportunity for our community to come in an show support, learn about coding and how schools are supporting 21st-century learners. We want to encourage the community to come in and see the student engagement, " said Dr. Sue Kane, Co-Director of the Apple STEM Network.

To show support for the importance of computer science education, the Greater Wenatchee Area Technology Alliance (GWATA) will support the hour of code events with outreach and representative computer science professionals will be attending each event. The students and community can hear first-hand about the need for computer science in our local workforce.

All Hour of Code are free and include raffles, prizes and an opportunity to meet a professional coder. No experience needed and support in both English and Spanish will be available. All ages welcome.
