Freya Rolfs an 8th-grader at Pioneer Middle School, spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Rolfs was one of 23 students who served as Senate pages for the 10th week of the 2019 legislative session.

She was sponsored by 12th Legislative District Sen. Brad Hawkins, who serves Douglas and Chelan counties and parts of Grant and Okanogan counties.

“Freya was an outstanding page,” Hawkins said. “The program gives students insight into the legislative process and encourages them to pursue their interests with a new perspective, and I am glad she had the opportunity to be a part of that.”

The Senate Page Program provides an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working at the Legislature. Students transport documents between offices, as well as deliver messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

Rolfs was the flag-bearer as part of the Honor Guard at the opening of the Senate floor session on March 22.

“There could be a future in politics for me,” Rolfs said. “I enjoyed sitting in on committee hearings, seeing how bills are passed, and delivering notes between senators on the floor.”

Rolfs enjoys playing the guitar and participating in her school’s debate team.

Rolfs, 14, is the daughter of Mike and Sara Rolfs of Wenatchee.
