The Wenatchee High School student newspaper, “The Apple Leaf,” took home second place in the Newspaper Tabloid division at the JEA/NSPA National Convention on April 27. Ten of the 24 Apple Leaf staff members attended the convention in Anaheim, Calif. This is the publication’s best finish since placing second in 2012 and comes after a seventh-place finish last year and a tenth-place finish the year before.

The student editorial board selected the March 27 issue “Inside Mental Health: Connecting the Dots” to be reviewed and scored by the NSPA judges. The judges rated the paper on design and content. “The Apple Leaf” produces nine issues throughout the school year.

In addition to overall newspaper Best of Show competition, nine students competed in individual write-off competitions. Four Apple Leaf staff members were recognized. Sophomore Lili Cruz and junior Tara Dilly received Excellent ratings in First-Year Photo and Review Writing, respectively. Additionally, sophomore Cassie Alaniz and senior Gwen McQuaig received Honorable Mention awards in Newswriting and News Editing/Headline Writing, respectively.

The eighth issue of The Apple Leaf will be published on May 8 with a focus on standardized testing.
