WHS Graduation and Post-secondary Attainment Rates Rank Highest Among Similar Schools in State

Wenatchee High School Grad

Recent data released by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and Washington’s Education Research & Data Center (ERDC) shows positive results for Wenatchee High School (WHS) students achievement and post-secondary attainment when compared with similar schools in Eastern Washington.

STATE REPORT CARD DATA

Annually, OSPI publishes the Washington State School Report Card, a report that provides parents, educators, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders in Washington state with information about K-12 public schools. It includes demographic information about students at the school, district and state levels, and data about student achievement on statewide assessments.

OSPI debuted a new report card format this year that aligns with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which replaced No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2015. In Washington State, OSPI used the School Improvement Framework (WSIF) for accountability to meet the new ESSA requirement. Each school is measured on the Framework by OSPI.

In a comparative analysis of 10 Eastern Washington high schools with similar demographics to WHS (45+% Free and Reduces Lunch rate, and 30+ Latino population), school administrators were able to assess WHS’s performance in relation to peer schools. All data is based on the 2017-2018 school year and compares WHS with 10 cohort schools; Eastmont, Davis, Eisenhower, Moses Lake, Sunnyside, Kennewick, Southridge, Pasco, Chiawana and Walla Walla.

Wenatchee High School Comparative Analysis Results - Report Card Data

  • Highest graduation rate (91%)
  • Second highest WSIF Achievement Index (6.1)
  • Third highest in students enrolled in dual credit (60.8%)
  • Second highest percentage of 9th-grade students on track to graduate (73.3%)
  • Top third in regular attendance (77.7%)
  • Top third of students who met Math standards (31.3%)

Just like a student report card that comes home, schools are evaluated in a variety of areas which serve as indicators for decision making. Complete State Report Card data is available at reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us

“This really is a checkpoint for us to stand back and use data to see how we stack up, celebrate the effort that our entire district has put into learning and make plans for the future,” said Wenatchee High School Principal Eric Anderson. “We have much to be proud of and several areas where we can take strides to make improvements.”

WASHINGTON STATE EDUCATION RESEARCH AND DATA CENTER: HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE OUTCOMES

Washington’s Education Research and Data Center (ERDC) compiles data about students into a data dashboard as they move through school to the workforce. The purpose of ERDC dashboard is to provide school districts, high school, and other stakeholders with information about the postsecondary education (enrollment, persistence, completion) and workforce (hours worked, wages) outcomes of their high school graduates. The complete ERDC data dashboard report is available online at erdc.wa.gov/data-dashboards/high-school-graduate-outcomes

Using the same 10 Eastern Washington cohort schools in a comparative analysis of the ERDC data, Wenatchee High School yielded positive high school graduate outcomes.

Wenatchee High School Comparative Analysis Results - High School Graduate Outcomes Ranking

  • Highest percentage of students who persisted beyond year one at 2-year colleges (68%)
  • Highest percentage of grads who earned a bachelor’s degree within eight years of graduation (35%)
  • Highest median earning for students 12 years after graduation/Bachelor’s ($64,000)
  • Top third of schools with students who persisted beyond year one at 4-year colleges/universities (89%)
  • Top third of schools with students who enrolled in 4-year college/universities (28%)
  • Top third of schools with a median earning for students 12 years after graduation/Associate’s ($41,400)

“We have a high rate of students, above the state average, enrolling in 2-year colleges and then transferring to 4-year colleges where they are graduating with a bachelors degree a higher rate than others in our cohort,” said Anderson. “So many of our students matriculate in our district from kindergarten through 12th-grade that this data reflects the hard work happening in our classrooms at every level in the District.”

In addition to direct instruction, Anderson credits college and career readiness support such as the  Wenatchee High School College Mentor Program and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program for helping to encourage students to pursue post-secondary education.
