USA and WHS Flags Stolen from Wenatchee High School

By Tom Couey, Security Officer, Wenatchee High School

On Monday morning Wenatchee High School students noticed that our U.S. and Wenatchee High School Flags were missing from the flagpole outside of our front doors.

The Wenatchee School Districts flies the U.S. flag outside of all of our schools and in every classroom.  We begin our class day with the pledge of allegiance.

At Wenatchee High School we also have a WHS Flag. The Wenatchee High School Flag was a gift from Senior Jonathan Higgins as part of his Eagle Scout Project.  Jonathan also gave a flag to Jon Newberry Middle School.  Jonathan designed the flags and raised money for their production by a professional flag maker.  He presented the flag to Wenatchee High School on his 18th Birthday last October.  Jonathan says that the flag is meant “as a symbol of who we are as a school” and that it “embodies our desire to learn.”

Together the U.S. flag and our school flag are important reminders of who we are as a nation, a community and a school and foster in us a sense of history, pride and accomplishment.

A review of security camera footage caught the suspect prowling around the school and stealing the flag from our flagpole at 4:13 am on Saturday February 6.  The suspect appears to be a white male in his 20’s wearing a dark stocking cap, light colored plaid coat, dark hoody, dark pants and skater shoes.  The best view of the suspect shows him walking up to and looking into the auditorium doors.  The suspects clothing looks different in the video of him stealing the flag because in that video his only lit by ultraviolet.

The investigation has been turned over to Wenatchee Police.  Wenatchee Police ask that anyone with information about this theft please call 509-663-9911.

We would appreciate getting out flags back, and hope to save others from experiencing a theft in the future.
