District-wide Professional Learning Two Options on December 2

Two professional learning options for certificated staff will be offered on December 2, 2016.  Both options include information related to our PBIS initiative and brain research.  Please choose one option and complete the online course registration by November 21, 2016.  Staff must register and attend one option in order to receive compensation.

Option 1:

Shouting Won’t Grow Dendrites:  20 Techniques to Detour Around the Danger Zones

Dr. Marcia Tate

Have you ever noticed that the louder some teachers get when reprimanding students, the louder those students also become?  Learn techniques for managing an active, brain-compatible classroom without ever raising your voice.  Experience five techniques that proactive classroom managers use to avoid problems in the first place.  Learn to 1) develop a relationship with each student; 2) create a physical classroom environment that is conducive to optimal learning; 3) deliver engaging lessons with the use of brain-compatible strategies; 4) develop a proactive management plan; and 5) tackle the most challenging 10% of students by using techniques which appear to work with such chronic behavior disorders as attention-deficit, conduct, or oppositional disorder.  You will also experience the bonus of learning to create a home environment that minimizes stress and maximizes calm!

Time:  8:00-3:30 p.m.

District Per Diem Time Sheets:  7.5 hours (6 Clock Hours)

Location:  Wenatchee Convention Center

Option 2:

Research Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning

Constructing Durable, Transferable Memory for ELLs and ALL Students

Dr. Judy Willis

Dr. Willis will share how the application of the neuroscience research to teaching offers keys to access the brain’s most powerful information processing networks to increase memory construction, accuracy, durability, and retrieval. You’ll learn what this research reveals about how the brain constructs physical links between new information and prior knowledge to successfully capture and retain learning. Students who construct their understanding and are guided to extend learning into concept neural networks will have wisdom that can be applied in school and transferred to new applications long after the school years.  Topics including the latest research on neuroplasticity, dopamine-reward memory, and the power of patterning will be linked to ready-to-use relevant classroom strategies.  This keynote will be followed by a same-day book study led by our GLAD trainers.
