What is it about?

Our vision for the Personal Device Initiative is to create community classrooms using classroom and personalized technology that show the potential of our long term vision for learning in Wenatchee schools.

The Director of Technology, Technology Facilitators and 1:1 Teachers will be working closely to develop plans and procedures to make learning more personal for students. This will mean a change in the way we teach and a change in the way students learn. We do not want to just add technology to the classroom and not change how things are done.

Education is a multivariant challenge. Throwing technology at the problem without redesigning the whole context just won't work. Some students and teachers will of course benefit from technology, and we'll read about them in vendor case studies. But most will continue to struggle and work around the newest complexity thrown into their environments.

We are trying to personalize education from the ground up and the personal technology devices are one piece of scaffolding that can keep it all together for our students. Through our strategic planning our schools are doing our best to make this shift to personalized and flexible learning.

We have chosen our devices for many reasons including, but not limited to: Battery life, overall costs, reliability, familiarity, application availability, screen mirroring, management, adaptability, and versatility.

Four key areas of our Personal Device Initiative:

Equipment

Each classroom will be outfitted with current Learning and Teaching tools and devices for the students and the teacher. Applications for the technology will be purchased as the teacher and student determine the need. Our initial investments in these classrooms are listed below.

Training

Staff in the 1:1 classrooms will receive differentiated on-going support and training from the Technology and Learning & Teaching departments. They will also have embedded training within the classroom enabling them to model and to be modeled for in the best way we know how. Our Technology Facilitator will be trained in supporting the use of these devices as a teaching and learning tool in the classroom.

Curriculum

Curriculum in the 1:1 classrooms will cover the same standards across the district. They will leverage Open Educational Resources (OER) and other web base content.  All staff will use Canvas as their learning management system.

Measures

Student, staff, and parent perception data will be collected regarding the implementation and effectiveness. Data will also be collected about cost, loss, theft, referrals, attendance, etc. This will help us determine the long term feasibility of personalized student and teacher technology tools.
